Understand the difference between a chatbot and AI

A chatbot shares prepared information through buttons, while AI answers free-text questions like a person. See the difference with a real example.

People often mix up chatbots and AI. In this video, Smartbot chats with its own Facebook page to show how each one works with a real example.

See how a chatbot works

Send a message to Smartbot's Facebook page and tap Get started. The chatbot replies with messages that have buttons. For example, it asks “Та өмнө пэйж хуудсандаа чатбот ашиглаж байсан уу?” (Have you used a chatbot on your page before?) and offers Yes (Тийм) and No, first time (Үгүй, анх удаа).

Each button you tap brings up information the page prepared in advance. For example, tapping Price (Үнэ) shows options to buy for 1 month, 6 months or 1 year.

This is what a chatbot is: it shows customers information that was prepared beforehand. Businesses use chatbots to inform customers, grow sales and automate their page.

See how AI answers

On a page with AI, as soon as you tap Get started, the AI greets you and lists what it can help with, such as service prices and features, extra chatbot capabilities, registration and how to pay.

After that you don't need to look for buttons. You simply type your question. In the video, typing “uniin huvid hed ve” (how much is it?) in Latin letters gets the matching price information straight away.

The replies come from automated artificial intelligence, yet the conversation feels like talking to a person.

The key difference

  • Chatbot: customers tap buttons to get prepared information. For example, they tap Price to see prices.
  • AI: customers just type “үнийн мэдээлэл авъя” (I'd like price information). The AI understands the question and replies as if they were chatting with a person.
  • You also prepare information for the AI in advance. The difference is that the AI holds a human-like conversation.
