Connect a boosted post to your chatbot

Link a chatbot flow to your Facebook ad in Ads Manager with JSON code or a keyword button, so people who message you from the ad get automatic replies.

When you boost a post on Facebook, connecting your chatbot lets it automatically reply to people who message you from the ad. If the chatbot isn't set up correctly, Facebook's own default replies are sent instead and the chatbot doesn't respond. There are two ways to connect it: paste your flow's JSON code into the ad, or add a keyword button such as “Эхлэх” (Start).

Prepare a flow for the boost

In Flows (Өрөлт), prepare a flow for your ad. The example has the text “Та сонирхож буй бүтээгдэхүүнээ сонгоорой” (Choose the product you're interested in) with the buttons “Хөргөгч” (Fridge), “ТВ” (TV) and “Бусад” (Other). Link each button to that product's information. The “Бусад” button can start another flow, such as your main menu.

Don't use the contact's full name field in the text of a flow connected to a boost. It works in the chatbot, but Facebook adds the name to the ad's greeting itself, so this field can't be used.

When the flow is ready, click Publish.

Copy the flow's JSON code

Click the three dots (⋯) in the top-right corner of the flow and choose Get JSON for Messenger Ads. Click Copy in the window that opens.

Create a campaign in Ads Manager

Go to Ads Manager and click + Create. When using the chatbot, always choose Engagement as the campaign objective. Then choose Manual engagement campaign, which gives you more options. Give the campaign a name related to your product.

Set up the ad set

In the ad set's Conversion section, check that Conversion location is Message destinations, then select the Page your chatbot is connected to under Facebook Page. After that, set your targeting, such as location and age.

Choose the post to promote

In the ad, set Ad setup to Use existing post, then click Select post under Ad creative and pick the post. To make a new post instead, click Create post. The settings below only appear after you complete these steps.

Paste the JSON code into Chat builder

In the Chat builder section, click Create template. In the window that opens, choose JSON and continue.

Click the very top of the code box to activate it; it gets a dark border. Press Ctrl+A to select all the code, delete it, and paste the code you copied. Click outside the box and the preview shows your flow's text and buttons.

Then click Publish to publish the ad. People who view the ad and tap a button receive your flow in chat right away.

Method 2: Edit the greeting and questions

In Chat builder, click Edit on the Suggested template.

  • Change the Greeting text. Facebook inserts the person's name here automatically. It's a good idea to write text that tells viewers what to do, such as “Доорх товчлуур дээр дараад мэдээлэл аваарай” (Tap the button below to get information).
  • If you don't need call invitations, turn off Invite people to call you on Messenger.
  • Frequently asked questions has three questions. Delete two of them and change the first one to “Эхлэх”. Leave Automated response empty. People will then see “Эхлэх” as a button.

Add the “Эхлэх” keyword in Keywords

In the Chatbot panel, open Keywords (Үг таних) and add the keyword “Эхлэх”. Under Bot Response, choose Flow, select the flow you prepared for the boost (for example “Boost өрөлт”) and click Save. Then make sure the toggle in the Status column is on.

Now people who view the ad receive a message with an “Эхлэх” button. Tapping it sends the word “Эхлэх” to the chatbot as a message, Keywords recognizes it, and the boost flow is sent. If your flows are well connected to each other, you can use this “Эхлэх” method all the time.

Run several boosts at once

If several boosts run at the same time, name each button after its product. For example, use “Хөргөгч” (Fridge) for the fridge reel and “Телевизор” (TV) for the TV reel, and link each word to the matching flow in Keywords. People who watch the fridge ad then receive only fridge information.

Don't leave Facebook's default English questions in place (for example “Can I learn more about your business?”). When someone taps one, the chatbot doesn't recognize the sentence, so it doesn't respond.

Good to know

  • Include buttons in the flow you connect to a boost. People appear in Inbox (Харилцан яриа) only after they tap a button.
  • People who view the ad but don't tap a button won't show up in Inbox. That doesn't mean the boost isn't reaching people: under Facebook's rules, the system doesn't message people who haven't responded.
